EYFS - Reception

Vision and Aims

The purpose of Reception at Iver Village Infant school is to provide an environment and curriculum which allows all pupils to grow into happy, confident children who are ready to start the next stage of their learning in Key Stage One.

By the end of Reception, our aim is that all pupils will:

  • Read and write short sentences
  • Work confidently with numbers up to 20
  • Independently dress and undress
  • Form friendships and work as part of a team
  • Manage their feelings and behaviour
  • Know how to stay safe and healthy both in and out of school.

Class Structure

In Nursery, we have one class and in Reception, we have two classes, Pine and Elm.

In each reception class, there is a class teacher and at least two teaching assistants in addition to the class teacher. The staff involved are highly-trained, motivated and plan to give your child the best possible start to their education.

The first year in a child's life at school is very important. All staff will provide care, support, guidance, discipline and learning opportunities throughout every day.

Curriculum

The child is always at the heart of how we plan and teach in Reception.  Whilst the curriculum incorporates a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activity, the children spend a large part of their day engaging in play.  Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and relate to others.

Foundation stage planning is based upon the Curriculum Guidance and the seven areas of learning - Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), Communication and Language (C&L), Physical Development (PD), Literacy (L), Mathematics (M), Understanding the World (UtW) and Expressive Arts and Design (EAD).

Reading and writing skills are developed and consolidated through our contextual continuous provision, layered to meet the needs of all pupils.

The children receive a short maths carpet session every day before engaging in carefully planned activities planned to motivate and develop their skills.

Reception plan topics for each half term based on the children's interests.  These are therefore fluid and can change as each half term progresses.
